Shyam Metalics shares were marginally up on September 27 after the company in a regulatory filing announced having forayed into the energy storage sector with the launch of ‘battery-grade aluminium’ required in the manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries.

Aluminium foil is a critical component in the lithium-ion battery production process, acting as a positive current collector.

“As India gets ready to set up Lithium-ion cell Giga-factories as part of the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, we now foray into raw material space for Lithium-ion cell manufacturing. This strengthens the indigenization drive in the strategically important energy storage solutions sector,” the company said.

“We are committed to securing minerals and streamlining cell and battery manufacturing to power our grid and EV transition. With the government’s support through duty reductions and funding, our new battery foil division will drive cost-efficient battery production,” said Sheetij Agarwal, Head of Business Excellence and Strategy.

At 9.45 am on the NSE, the Shyam Metalics stock was quoting at Rs 444.50 apiece, up Rs 3.05, or 0.69 percent.

The stock is up nearly 37 percent in year-to-date terms and is in the consolidation phase since August 9.

In its results for the April-June quarter, the company reported a 2.60 percent YoY (year-on-year) increase in revenue from operations at Rs 3,307 crore. Net profit for the quarter dropped 43.23 percent YoY to Rs 235 crore. The operating profit margins for the quarter contracted by 700 basis points on a yearly basis to 12 percent.

Shyam Metalics and Energy is engaged in the business of steel manufacturing and energy generation. The company produces a range of steel products including long steel and flat steel products. Additionally, it generates power through its captive power plants.
