Shares of SpiceJet skyrocketed 20 percent to hit upper circuit and 52-week high of Rs 52.29 per share on December 7 after the company said that its board will meet on December 11 to weigh options for raising fresh capital. The S&P BSE Sensex was flat 69,580 levels, as of 11:15am.

In the past one month, the stock of this low-cost carrier surged 32 percent as against a 6 percent rise in the benchmark Sensex.

As per an exchange filing on December 6, SpiceJet said that it will meet on December 11 to discuss and consider options for raising fresh funds through issuing equity shares or convertible securities on a preferential basis in accordance with the relevant provisions of applicable laws and subject to approval of the shareholders of the company.

This comes after the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) dismissed a plea to initiate insolvency proceedings against the airline filed by aircraft lessor Willis Lease Finance over unpaid dues.

Around three aircraft lessors filed four insolvency pleas against SpiceJet in 2023 for non-payment of dues. Other than the lessors, a tech services provider has also moved an insolvency plea against the airline.

The debt-laden airline has been facing operational disruptions across India, delaying flight services recently in Pune, Patna and New Delhi airports.

In the September quarter, promoters decreased their holdings in SpiceJet to 56.53 percent from 58.98 percent in June quarter.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs), too, trimmed their stake to 0.29 percent in September 2023 from 0.35 percent in the previous quarter.

On the other hand, institutional investor holdings declined to 0.31 percent in the September quarter from 0.37 percent in the previous quarter.
