145 Nations support UN General Assembly resolution condemning Israeli settlement activities in Occupied Palestinian Territory

A total of 145 nations have voted in support of aUnited Nations (UN) General Assembly resolution that condemns Israeli settlement activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT).

The UN resolutiondenouncing settlement operations in the OPT, including East Jerusalem and in the occupied Syrian Golan, was approved on Nov. 16 by the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee) with a recorded vote of 145 in favor, seven against and 18 abstentions.

According to a UN report, attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestiniansin the West Bank and East Jerusalem have more than doubled since the Hamas attack on Oct. 7. These attacks have led hundreds of Palestinians to leave their homes, resulting in over 9,500 deaths. Additionally, the UN has documented 222 settler attacks against Palestinians in October alone, resulting in eight deaths and 64 injuries, nearly half of which were caused by live ammunition.

The UN strongly condemns settlement activities like confiscation of land; disruption of the livelihood of protected persons; forced transfer of civilians; and annexation of land, whether de facto or through national legislation. The resolution stated thatthese settlements are illegal and a hindrance to peace and economic and social development. The increase in frequent and intense violence has brought back memories of the “Nakba,” or catastrophe, from the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were expelled from their homes and many could not return. Back then, their villages were either destroyed or renamed to wipe out their histories.

To date, Palestinian villages have experienced the same or even worse. Based on the testimonies of the Umm al-Kheir villagers,masked men in army uniforms were overrunning communities, beating and intimidating them. The men also smashed their cell phones prior to theattack to prevent documentation.

Meanwhile in Susiya, settlers and reservists confront and threaten residentseven in daylight as they drive through the village. At night, no one sleeps much as villagers relocate their bedding outside, hoping to better hear if raiding parties approach.

In the Bedouin Palestinian communities, farmers are already scared to plant their crops or let their herds roam freely.Some residents have stopped going outside altogether, surviving on whatever food was in their cupboards since Oct. 7. Adults prioritize feeding the children first, while children wonder why adults do not eat.

Villagers in the South Hebron Hills, once home to 4,000 Palestinians, now face the threat of abandonment as settler leaders openlyclaimit as part of Israel.Jewish communities are growing in the area, with some being well-lit places that cultivate fruit and produce wine. Others are more isolated outposts, indicating potential future population shifts.

Yesh Din, an Israeli rights group keeping a close eye on the West Bank, documents troubling incidents related to the Israel-Hamas war. The group stated that attacks were increasing and changing day by day.

For instance, Palestinian farmers in Qusra discoveredthat 500 olive trees passed down through generations were destroyed, and their farmland was covered with cement. In Qaryut,local harvesterswere attacked and blocked from returning to their village.
